Qwest Internet & Broadband Services

What you might not know and are you getting what you pay for?

Originally, I began my service with Qwest's Basic Internet Service @ about 512 Kbps and upgraded to 1.5 megabits I believe at the time it was called Premium Plan.  For a year, I paid for 1.5, when I was only getting 512.  And one day I called to inquire and found out the day I upgraded to 1.5, no one at Qwest flipped the switch to up my service to 1.5  The Customer Service Rep, asked why did I wait a whole year to bring this to our attention.  I said, I did not know I was not getting 1.5, presumed I was and at times my access speed seemed slow, I checked using a Free Online Broadband Speed Test site.  After some debate, I was reimbursed the difference for that year.  Also with my service subscription I was given e-mail accounts of qwest.net

Recently, I wanted to sign up for one of Qwest's Bundle and Save with Price for Life offers.  Bundle and Save packages, combine Internet Service, Digital TV, Wireless Phone and Long Distance Calling Plans.  What I was not told by the Qwest Sales Person and Kiosk Manager, was that I would not get the Platinum Plan and that my Qwest.net e-mail account would be dropped.  Which I learned 30 days after the purchase of their Platinum Internet Service, that I did not get this plan and one morning went to check my personal e-mail and found the service was down, so I thought.

I could not get 24 Tech Support as mentioned on Qwest's Contact Us/Customer Service page, for if you do talk to someone, it is an out-source service in a foreign country and they cannot help you and tell you to call back during normal business hours.  What I was told was that since I have MSN service with Qwest, I no longer have Qwest.net.  Something I specifically mentioned to the Qwest Sales Manager that I DID NOT want MSN or Yahoo packages.

I called Customer Service on Monday, now going on the 4th day without mail service.  The Customer Service Rep. said, that I could keep my Qwest.net address and gave me a confirmation number.  What he did not say was I could not get the Price for Life Offer, since wanting to keep my Qwest.net address removed me from any package offered /unknowingly that I signed up for the day I went with bundle and save.

While I was talking to the Customer Service Rep. I checked my broadband speeds and mentioned I was at 1.2 megabits not 3.0 that I was under the impression I was receiving and I was transferred to Technical Support.  From Qwest's end I was boosted to about 2.2 megabits.  Hmmm, what did Tech Support do to boost me, was this the same thing I experienced my first year with Qwest?

An in-field Technician arrived the next day and check my phone line and said, the best I might be able to get is 2.4 megabits.  That I should of stayed at 1.5 for a stable connection.  The reason was that I was too far from Qwest's terminal to receive 3.0 megabits.  And my DSL modem might not accept 3.0.  I then said, so the Sale Manager who I thought hooked me up with the Platinum service plan, did not in fact know that were I lived I would receive 3.0 or now that I look at what Qwest Internet Service packages Qwest's offer, Platinum is about 7.0 or 125 times faster than 56Kbps.

Qwest Internet Services offered are Qwest Connect with Windows Live (Fast) Up to 5 times faster than 56Kbps dial-up, Silver (Faster) with Windows Live, Up to 25 times faster than 56Kbps dial-up, or  Platinum (Fastest) with Windows Live, Up to 125 times faster than 56Kbps dial-up.

Qwest Connect - 1.5 Mbps

Qwest Connect Silver - 3.0 Mbps

Qwest Connect Platinum - 7.0 Mbps

They also offer Price for Life.  Which is only a 2 yr commitment.  At the time of this writing I have not checked with Qwest in how it says Price for Life, but only has a 2 yr commitment.  So at this point, I am thinking the Price for Life means life of the commitment.

In summary, the Qwest Sales person does not know that although you live where you cannot get 3.0 or 7.0 even with a DSL modem that can handle a faster speed, you will not get what you pay for, because of how far you are from the terminal, condition of phone lines in between.

That when bundling or changing service plans, you may loose your Qwest.net e-mail account if you have one without notice.

That although at the time of subscribing to an Internet Service Plan, 30 days later, sooner or later, you may find out all along you are not bundled and are not saving.

And Price for Life may not mean as long as you stay with Qwest.
